I had the pleasure of going to a Costa Rican Bull Riding event.  I had always seen it on TV, but never got to see it first hand.  This past week, I was lucky.  We were invited to the Filidelfia Bull Riding in Guanacaste.  Being from Texas, the bull riding was a normal thing we would see at the Rodeo in Texas. The difference in Costa Rica is what happens afterwards.  The Bull rider rides the bull for as many seconds as he can.  After he gets thrown off, locals run around the bull trying to touch him.  This is all voluntary, of course. At this point, the bull is pretty annoyed at having some guy riding him.  Spectators get to watch the bull chase locals around. The people jump up on the fence at the last second to avoid getting hit by the bull.  I have to admit it looks quite dangerous, but it is sure fun to watch.

Afterwards, everyone goes to the local fair to watch fireworks and eat good food.  If you are in Costa Rica next December, try to go to  one of these local bull riding events.  It goes on for a full week daily after Christmas.
